In 2002 the Wirral Aviation Society (TWAS) learnt that BAe Systems Regional Aircraft at Woodford were disposing of several airframes on site. With the help of members from Avro Heritage and other local aviation enthusiasts, a plan was formulated to preserve the fourth prototype Jetstream 41 G-JMAC.
The Jetstream Club, affiliated to TWAS was formed. The original Speke Airport terminal had just been renovated and opened as a hotel under the Marriott brand name and permission had been obtained to site the aircraft on the old apron.
Once the go ahead had been received, the RAF Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Flight dismantled the aircraft, moved it to the apron at Speke on two large low loaders and then reassembled the airframe, all within a period of two weeks during January 2003.
Over the years other items of aviation memorabilia have been aquired and this lead to a change of name to reflect the expansion. The Jetstream Club was renamed Speke Aerodrome Heritage Group (SAHG) in 2010 although both names remain registered with the Charity Commission. The hotel has also changed brands during this time and is currently owned by Kew Green using the Crowne Plaza brand name.
